Guatemala (return) + Utila — Rescue & Divemaster

Aug 17–mid Oct • ~8–9 weeks
🟡 Planning
Accommodation

Not yet arranged — will book own place for the extended stay rather than dorm rooms.

Activities
🤿 EFR 🤿 Rescue Diver 🤿 Divemaster Underwater Vision
Notes

New direction, decided 15 Jul — Buenos Aires, Mendoza, Patagonia (Las Torres) and El Chaltén all dropped. Cost + isolation of that leg felt like too much on top of an already ambitious trip. Instead: return to Guatemala after Bolivia, then Utila for PADI Rescue + Divemaster (EFR required first) with Underwater Vision, min. ~1.5 months. ✅ Flight booked 23 Jul — Avianca AV224, La Paz→Bogotá→Guatemala City, departs 03:25am 17 Aug. Course quote/timeline requested 15 Jul, awaiting reply.

🇧🇷

Brazil (São Paulo + Rio)

TBD • ~1–2 weeks?
🟡 Uncertain
Accommodation

São Paulo: friend's place, if the leg happens. Rio: hostels / budget stays.

Activities
🗻 Christ Redeemer Culture Beach
Notes

Iguazú Falls, São Paulo, and Rio are all uncertain, pending the Divemaster course timeline and a decision on whether to still visit Brazil before flying home. Currently leaning toward a short ~1–2 week visit, since Utila now covers the "slow down" role Buenos Aires was meant to. The paid Rio→Cork return flight (02.11.2026) assumes ending the trip via Rio — needs revisiting once this is decided.

Budget
Not yet estimated

❌ Removed 15 Jul: Buenos Aires + Mendoza, Patagonia (Las Torres W Circuit — cancellation confirmed 18 Jul, deposit refund requested), El Chaltén (Fitz Roy/Cerro Torre). See Notes tab for the full story.

⚠️ Major Itinerary Rework — 15 Jul 2026
Buenos Aires + Mendoza, Patagonia (Las Torres W Circuit), and El Chaltén all dropped. Rationale: the cost of that leg plus the isolation of it felt like too much on top of an already ambitious trip.

New plan: return to Guatemala after Bolivia — flight booked 23 Jul, arriving 17 Aug — then Utila for PADI Rescue + Divemaster with Underwater Vision (same operator as the first Utila stint) — EFR required first as a prerequisite for Rescue. Minimum ~1.5 months, through mid-October. This now serves the slow, unstructured recovery role the Buenos Aires window was meant to.

Patagonia: cancellation confirmed 18 Jul by Niscerelle Barrientos G. (Las Torres) — full $414 USD deposit refund requested to the original card, ~15 business days max. Balance ($1,656, was due 23 Jul) never paid.

LATAM CYEAUC (Buenos Aires→Punta Arenas, paid €333.47) — cancelled 15 Jul, 100% refund (€335.42) confirmed and in progress since it was Full fare.

Iguazú, São Paulo, and Rio are all now uncertain, pending a course timeline from Underwater Vision and a decision on whether to still visit Brazil before flying home — currently leaning toward a short ~1–2 week visit. The paid Rio→Cork return flight assumes ending via Rio and needs revisiting once that's settled.

CA-4 visa check: confirmed safe for the second Guatemala/Honduras entry — a 72hr+ stamped-out gap via Ecuador/Galápagos/Atacama/Bolivia resets the 90-day clock before re-entering Guatemala.
✅ Honduras (Utila) — Revised Plan (30 Jun 2026)
Utila (4 dive days, Jul 3–7) — cheaper than Roatán, excellent diving, great for logging dives before Galápagos. Nicaragua (San Juan del Sur) dropped — met someone in Xela, detoured to Río Blanco, arrived in Honduras later than planned. Keeping the existing Managua flight Jul 9 — transiting through Nicaragua on Jul 8 only, no stay. Ecuador arrival: UIO 08:40 on Jul 10 (overnight connections via SAL/BOG). Returning to Utila later in the trip (from ~Aug 16, see itinerary rework note above) for Rescue + Divemaster with Underwater Vision.
✅ Bolivia — Intrepid "Bolivia Highlights" GGSV — Booked & Fully Paid
Booking #🔒 · Ref 🔒 · Paid 20 Jun 2026 (🔒) ✅
Dates: 6–16 Aug 2026 (11 days) · Twin share · Travelling with two friends.
Itinerary: La Paz (welcome meeting 18:00 Aug 6) → Uyuni (Salt Flats, 4WD, Train Cemetery, Fish Island) → Eduardo Avaroa Reserve (Laguna Colorada, flamingos, Árbol de Piedra) → Potosí (silver mines, Casa Real de Moneda) → Sucre (UNESCO White City, dinosaur footprints, Chataquila trek) → La Paz.
Logistics: Arriving La Paz Aug 5 (LATAM LA864+OB673, 14:55 LPB) — full day before welcome meeting. ⚠️ OB673 VVI→LPB operated by Boliviana de Aviación — check in at VVI with OB, not LATAM.
⚠️ Bolivia Altitude Alert
Uyuni Salt Flats & much of Bolivia are 3,500–4,000m+. La Paz is 3,640m. You'll arrive from Atacama (~2,400m), so some acclimatisation helps. Diamox prescription collected ✅. Take it slow first days in La Paz. Good news: your fitness level is an asset!
✅ Yellow Fever — Confirmed
Vaccinated Feb 2019. Under WHO 2016 rules, one dose is lifelong — no booster required. Brazil entry requirement is satisfied. Certificate is valid permanently.
⚠️ CA-4 Visa Zone
Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua all share the CA-4 90-day combined allowance. First stint: Guatemala (~24 days) + Honduras (~5 days) + Nicaragua (1 day transit) = ~30 days — well within the limit. Second entry (from ~Aug 16, Guatemala + extended Utila stay): confirmed safe 15 Jul — a 72hr+ stamped-out gap in a non-CA-4 country (Ecuador/Galápagos/Atacama/Bolivia, several weeks) resets the 90-day clock before re-entering Guatemala, so the extended Utila stint doesn't risk an overstay.
✅ Revolut — Sorted
Revolut account and Revolut Credit Card already set up. Covers international spending with real exchange rates and low fees. Use Revolut as your primary travel card and credit card as backup. Wise not required.
✅ Pre-Departure Prep — Complete (Jun 1 2026)

💰 Built-in Budget Tracker
Your budget tracker is built into this planner — see the 💰 Tracker tab. Log daily spending per country with local currency conversion. €14,000 is tight but workable — Galápagos and flights are the big variables. All data saves locally to your device.
💡 End of Trip — Superseded 15 Jul (was: Revised Finale, decided 20 May)
Oct 3–7: Las Torres W Circuit (Torres del Paine, Chile). Oct 8–12: El Chaltén. Oct 14–16: Iguazú Falls. Oct 16–20: São Paulo. Oct 20–Nov 2: Rio de Janeiro. Tierra del Fuego (Ushuaia) was already dropped 20 May — effort/reward too low, logistics too tight.

New plan (15 Jul): Aug 17 – mid-Oct — Guatemala (return) + Utila for Rescue & Divemaster with Underwater Vision, min. ~1.5 months. Flight booked 23 Jul (Avianca AV224, La Paz→Bogotá→Guatemala City). Iguazú, São Paulo and Rio are all now uncertain pending the course timeline and a Brazil-or-not decision — currently leaning toward a short ~1–2 week Brazil visit before flying home.
💡 Dive Certification Card
Bring your PADI Advanced Open Water card (physical copy + photo). Advanced OW gets you into Gordon Rocks and other current-heavy Galápagos sites — essential. Confirm gear rental with Scuba Iguana or bring your own wetsuit (water is cooler Jul–Aug, 22–24°C, 3mm min recommended). Solo diving not allowed — they pair you with a buddy.

Avianca AV224 — La Paz → Bogotá → Guatemala City ~€421 ✅ 17.08.2026 · Ref 🔒 · 🔒 paid 23 Jul. Flex fare, 1x23kg bag.
Daily Living €6,000 – €7,500 Hostels €15–30/night, food €10–15/day, local transport, activities, occasional nicer stays. ⚠️ Not yet re-forecast for the 15 Jul rework — Utila is likely cheaper than the dropped Buenos Aires/Patagonia leg, but Divemaster course fees are an added cost not previously budgeted.
Buffer / Emergencies €500 – €1,000 Keep separate. Use only for true emergencies or last-minute changes.
TOTAL ESTIMATED ~€13,000 – €14,700 (stale — needs re-forecast) Original budget €14,000. ~€10,107 paid to date (as of 5 Aug — includes a taxi from El Alto Airport to the Qantu Hotel, 100 BOB (~€13.50), paid cash, plus the Atacama tours: ANKA Expediciones (Valle de la Luna, Valle Arcoíris, Laguna Baltinache, Tatio Geysers) + SPACE Stargazing, all paid cash in San Pedro. Also includes the Avianca AV224 Bolivia→Guatemala flight and the Chile/Bolivia accommodation gap-fills: Puna Hostel Atacama, Primeclass Lounge Santiago, Qantu Hotel La Paz; Santiago overnight paid via Marriott points. Also includes unplanned Honduras overnights/taxi, first-stint Utila diving + gear, and Quito accommodation actuals reconciled 18 Jul; removes the cancelled Las Torres cost and the now-refunded CYEAUC flight). Galápagos accommodation came in at €332 (vs ~€780 est.) — saving ~€448. Total available incl. Revolut credit card: €16,500. This total needs re-forecasting once the Divemaster course quote and extended Utila accommodation cost are known.

Budget Recommendations:

  • Use the built-in Budget Tracker tab — Log daily in real-time. All data saves locally to your device.
  • Galápagos fully booked — Scuba Iguana 6 dive days (~€1,385) + Hostal Sir Francis Drake 10 nights (€332 ✅) + National Park fee $200 cash + TCT card $30. Total Galápagos est. ~€1,900. Accommodation came in €448 under original estimate.
  • Internal flights — Book as you go (closer dates = cheaper sometimes). Use Google Flights or Skyscanner for price alerts. Consider overnight buses to save money (overnight bus = free accommodation).
  • Accommodation — Aim for €15–25/night average in hostels, mix in one nicer hotel per country (€40–60) for mental health breaks.
  • Food — South America is cheap. Street food €2–5, restaurant meals €8–15. Cook in hostels sometimes. Budget €10–12/day average.
  • Activities — Diving, hiking, tours are your main splurges. Most rest covered by accommodation/food budget.
  • Keep €500–1,000 emergency fund separate — Don't touch for daily spending.
